You bought the plan, scanned the QR code, and now the screen just says Activating with a spinning wheel that never stops. Or worse, a blunt message appears: Unable to Activate eSIM. Either way you have no service, and the phone gives you almost nothing to work with.
Most eSIM activation failures come from a short list of causes, and the carriers document the same fixes again and again for both iPhone and Android. Work through the 9 fixes below in order.
Quick Answer
If your eSIM is not activating, connect to a strong stable WiFi network first, because activation needs the internet to reach the carrier server. Then toggle Airplane Mode on and off, restart the phone, and update to the latest software version. If the screen is stuck on Activating, check that the phone is carrier unlocked, the QR code has not already been used, and the eSIM line is turned on in your cellular settings.
Why Is Your eSIM Not Activating?
An eSIM is a digital SIM profile that your phone downloads from your carrier instead of a physical card you slide into a tray. Based on carrier support pages and user reports, these are the real causes when the download fails:
- No stable internet during setup. The phone must reach the carrier activation server over the internet before the cellular plan goes live.
- Carrier locked phone. A phone locked to one carrier rejects eSIM profiles from a different carrier almost every time.
- Used or expired QR code. Most carrier QR codes work exactly once.
- Outdated software. Older iOS and Android builds have known eSIM activation bugs that newer updates fixed.
- Corrupt or half downloaded profile. An interrupted setup leaves a broken profile stuck on Activating.
- Incomplete provisioning on the carrier side. Sometimes the profile was never fully generated in the carrier system.
9 Fixes That Work
Fix 1: Connect to Strong Stable WiFi and Try Again
This single step fixes the majority of eSIM activation failures.
- Join a strong home or office WiFi network and confirm it works by loading any website.
- Go back to the eSIM setup screen and try the activation again.
- If it still spins, wait 10 to 15 minutes and retry once more. Carrier servers get busy and sometimes just need a second attempt.
Fix 2: Toggle Airplane Mode, Then Restart the Phone
A stuck cellular stack is the next most common culprit.
- Turn Airplane Mode on, wait a full 30 seconds, then turn it off and let the phone reconnect to WiFi.
- If the eSIM is still stuck, restart the phone completely and check your cellular or SIM settings to see whether the eSIM moved past Activating.
Fix 3: Update Your Software and Carrier Settings
Outdated software silently breaks eSIM activation.
- On iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then Software Update, and install any available update. On Android, use Settings, then System, then System Update.
- On iPhone, also check for a carrier settings update. Connect to WiFi, go to Settings, then General, then About, and wait about 20 seconds. If an update exists, a prompt appears.
- Restart the phone after updating and try the activation again.
Fix 4: Make Sure the eSIM Line Is Turned On and Selected
Sometimes the profile downloaded fine but the phone is simply not using it.
- On iPhone, go to Settings, then Cellular or Mobile Data, confirm the eSIM line toggle is on, and select the eSIM under Cellular Data.
- On Samsung, use Settings, then Connections, then SIM Manager. On Pixel, use Settings, then Network and Internet, then SIMs.
- Wait two to three minutes for the network to register the line.
If the phone does not recognize the eSIM profile at all, the problem may sit on the hardware side. See our guide on SIM not detected on Android for the physical checks that apply to embedded SIMs too.
Fix 5: Confirm the Phone Is Unlocked and the Code Is Fresh
A carrier lock is the number one reason an eSIM from a new carrier refuses to activate.
- On iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then About, and check Carrier Lock. It should say No SIM restrictions. If the phone is locked, only the original carrier can unlock it.
- If you already scanned the QR code once, even during a failed attempt, it is probably used up. Ask your carrier for a fresh code and try again on stable WiFi.
Fix 6: Enter the Activation Details Manually
When the camera refuses to scan the QR code, typing the details by hand often works.
- On the scan screen, tap Enter Details Manually.
- Type the SMDP plus server address and activation code from your carrier email exactly, with no extra spaces.
- Stay on stable WiFi and do not lock the phone or switch apps until the download finishes.
Fix 7: Remove the Broken Profile and Add It Again
A half downloaded profile stuck on Activating usually never recovers on its own.
- Warning first: only delete the eSIM if your carrier can reissue it. Apple warns that deleting an eSIM may require contacting the carrier for a replacement.
- On iPhone, go to Settings, then Cellular, tap the stuck line, and choose Delete eSIM. On Samsung use SIM Manager, on Pixel use the SIMs menu.
- Restart the phone, then add the eSIM again with a fresh QR code on stable WiFi.
Fix 8: Reset Network Settings
Corrupt network configuration can block activation even when everything else looks right. This does not delete your photos, apps, or messages.
- On iPhone, go to Settings, then General, then Transfer or Reset iPhone, then Reset, then Reset Network Settings. On current iOS this keeps your eSIMs, but choose keep if the phone asks.
- On Android, go to Settings, then System, then Reset options, and choose Reset WiFi, Mobile and Bluetooth.
- On Pixel and many other Android phones, also clear the Carrier Services app cache first. Go to Settings, then Apps, show system apps, open Carrier Services, then Storage, and tap Clear Cache. A stuck cache here can freeze activation.
- Reconnect to WiFi afterward and try the activation again.
Fix 9: Call Your Carrier with Your EID and IMEI Ready
If nothing above worked, the problem is almost certainly on the carrier side.
- Find your EID and IMEI under Settings, then General, then About on iPhone, or Settings, then About Phone on Android.
- Call carrier support, say your eSIM is stuck on activating, and give them both numbers.
- Ask them to confirm the line is fully provisioned and to push the activation from their end, and to issue a brand new QR code in case the old one is tied to a broken attempt.
Still Not Working?
If the eSIM finally shows as active but you still have no bars or no data, the activation succeeded and something else is wrong.
- Toggle Airplane Mode once more and give the phone a few minutes to register on the network.
- Try manual network selection and check for a carrier outage in your area before changing anything else.
- If the phone shows No Service on an iPhone, see our guide on iPhone shows No Service after an update for the deeper network side steps.
- If data specifically refuses to flow on Android once the line is active, our guide on mobile data not working on Android covers APN settings and data line selection in detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How long should eSIM activation take?
Usually a few minutes on a good connection. If the screen has said Activating for more than 15 minutes, treat it as stuck and work through the fixes above.
2. Can I delete the eSIM and add it again?
Yes, but only if your carrier can reissue the profile. Confirm that first. Deleting without a reissue path can leave you with no service at all.
3. Why does my QR code say it is no longer valid?
Most carrier QR codes are single use. Scanning it once, even during a failed attempt, can burn the code. Ask your carrier for a new one.
4. Does eSIM activation need WiFi?
Yes, in almost all cases. The phone needs the internet to download the profile from the carrier server before the cellular plan exists.
5. Will resetting network settings delete my eSIM?
On current iPhone software, no, but always choose the keep option if the phone asks. On Android the behavior varies by brand, so check your SIM manager after the reset.
