WhatsApp Images Not Showing in Gallery? 9 Fixes (Android & iPhone)

You open your gallery to find a photo someone sent you on WhatsApp — and it’s not there. The image is clearly visible inside the chat, but Google Photos, Samsung Gallery, or your iPhone’s Photos app acts like it never existed.

The good news: in almost every case, nothing has been deleted. WhatsApp stores received media in its own folder, and a single toggle (or one hidden file) decides whether your gallery is allowed to index those photos. Below are all 9 fixes, starting with the ones that solve this problem for the vast majority of people.

Why WhatsApp Images Don’t Show in the Gallery

Your gallery app (Google Photos, Samsung Gallery, Apple Photos) doesn’t “own” your pictures — it scans folders on your phone and displays what it finds. WhatsApp images disappear from that scan for one of five reasons:

One important distinction before you start: if the image won’t load inside WhatsApp itself, that’s a download problem, not a visibility problem — check your storage space and auto-download settings first (covered in Fix 6).

Android Fixes

Fix 1: Turn On Media Visibility in WhatsApp

This solves the problem for most Android users. WhatsApp has a global switch that decides whether downloaded media is shown to gallery apps at all.

1. Open WhatsApp and tap the ⋮ (three dots) menu → Settings.
2. Tap Chats.
3. Turn on Media visibility.

Important: this setting only affects newly downloaded media. Photos received while it was off stay hidden until you either re-download them or apply Fix 3 below.

Fix 2: Check Media Visibility for That Specific Chat

WhatsApp also lets you hide media per conversation, and this per-chat setting overrides the global one. If photos from one particular contact or group never show up:

1. Open that chat and tap the contact or group name at the top.
2. Find Media visibility.
3. Set it to Yes (or “Default” if the global setting is already on).

Fix 3: Delete the Hidden .nomedia File

Android has a system-wide convention: any folder containing a file named .nomedia is skipped by gallery apps entirely. When Media visibility is off, WhatsApp places this file inside its image folders — and sometimes it stays behind even after you turn the setting back on.

1. Open your file manager (Files by Google, or My Files on Samsung).
2. Enable Show hidden files (in the file manager’s settings menu).
3. Navigate to: Internal storage → Android → media → com.whatsapp → WhatsApp → Media → WhatsApp Images.
4. If you see a file called .nomedia, delete it. Check the Sent subfolder too.
5. Restart your phone so the media scanner re-indexes the folder.

On phones running Android 10 or earlier, the path may simply be Internal storage → WhatsApp → Media → WhatsApp Images.

Fix 4: Restore WhatsApp’s Storage Permission

Android sometimes auto-revokes permissions from unused apps, and some system updates reset them. Without storage access, gallery indexing breaks.

1. Long-press the WhatsApp icon → App info (ⓘ).
2. Tap Permissions.
3. Open Photos and videos (called Storage on older Android) and select Allow.
4. Also make sure Pause app activity if unused is turned off for WhatsApp.

Fix 5: Clear Your Gallery App’s Cache

If the settings above are correct but the gallery still shows nothing, the gallery’s own media index may be stale.

1. Long-press Google Photos (or Gallery on Samsung) → App info → Storage & cache.
2. Tap Clear cache (not “Clear storage” — cache only).
3. Reopen the gallery and give it a minute to rescan.

In Google Photos, also check Library → Photos on device — WhatsApp Images appears there as a device folder, and you can turn on backup for it so WhatsApp photos are included in your main Photos timeline.

Fix 6: Make Sure the Images Actually Downloaded

A photo that was never downloaded can’t appear in any gallery. Two things to check:

• Auto-download settings: WhatsApp → Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download. If “Photos” is unchecked under “When using mobile data,” images only download on Wi-Fi — or when you tap them manually.
• Free storage space: if your phone is nearly full, downloads silently fail. Free up at least 1–2 GB and re-open the chat.

iPhone Fixes

On iPhone, WhatsApp doesn’t use folders and .nomedia files — everything depends on two iOS-level settings.

Fix 7: Turn On “Save to Camera Roll”

Unlike Android, iPhone only copies WhatsApp photos into the Photos app when you explicitly tell it to:

1. Open WhatsApp → Settings (bottom right).
2. Tap Chats.
3. Turn on Save to Camera Roll.

Like Android’s Media visibility, this only applies to media received after you enable it. For older photos, open the image in the chat, tap Share → Save Image.

Fix 8: Give WhatsApp Full Access to Your Photos

Since iOS 14, apps can be limited to partial photo access — and if WhatsApp can’t write to your library, “Save to Camera Roll” silently does nothing.

1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
2. Scroll to WhatsApp (or go to Privacy & Security → Photos → WhatsApp).
3. Set Photos to Full Access — not “Limited” and not “None”.

Fix 9: Update WhatsApp and Restart

Outdated WhatsApp versions have had media-saving bugs on both platforms. Update from the App Store or Google Play, then restart your phone. A restart also forces Android’s media scanner and iOS’s Photos indexing to run fresh — which is why it fixes “stuck” galleries surprisingly often.

Why are my WhatsApp photos visible in the chat but not in my gallery?
