Short answer: Paramount Plus error code 111 is an ad-loading failure. The full on-screen message says it: “The video is unavailable because we were unable to load a message from a sponsor. If you are using ad blocking software please disable it and reload the page. Error Code: 111.” On the ad-supported Essential plan, the player must fetch an ad before it can play the show. If anything on your device or network blocks that ad request (an ad blocker, a privacy extension, a filtering DNS, a Pi-hole, a VPN, or a corrupted cache), the ad never arrives and Paramount+ refuses to start the video. Fix the blocker and the error disappears. The steps below are ordered by how often each one is the real cause.
Why error 111 happens (and why it is usually not Paramount’s fault)
Paramount+ sells two kinds of plan. Premium is ad-free apart from some live TV. Essential is cheaper and pays for itself by showing ads. On Essential, the player runs a short sequence before every stream: it contacts an ad server, downloads the ad, and only then loads the episode. Error 111 is the player reporting that step one or two failed. That is why the error is far more common on Essential than on Premium, why it often appears in a browser rather than a TV app, and why “check your internet” advice rarely helps: your internet is fine, one specific request is being stopped.

How to fix Paramount Plus error code 111
Fix 1: Turn off ad blockers and privacy extensions in the browser
This is the cause in the majority of browser cases. uBlock Origin, AdBlock Plus, AdGuard, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, and “shields” built into Brave all block the ad request the player needs.
- Open your extensions list (Chrome and Edge: puzzle-piece icon → Manage extensions) and disable every ad-blocking and privacy extension, then reload paramountplus.com. Do not just whitelist the site at first; some blockers continue to block third-party ad domains even on whitelisted pages.
- If disabling works, re-enable the extension and add paramountplus.com to its allow list. If the error returns, the blocker’s allow list is not covering the ad domains, and you will need to keep it off for Paramount+ or use a separate browser profile for streaming.
- Brave: click the lion icon in the address bar and set Shields to Down for the site. Firefox: click the shield icon left of the address bar and turn Enhanced Tracking Protection off for the site; the Strict setting blocks ad loading.
- Safari: Settings → Safari → turn off Prevent Cross-Site Tracking as a test, and check Extensions for any content blocker.
Fix 2: Try a private window, then a different browser
- Open a private or incognito window and sign in. Extensions are usually disabled there, which is a clean test of whether an extension is the cause.
- If the private window works, the cause is an extension or cached data in your normal profile. Clear site data for paramountplus.com: click the lock or tune icon in the address bar → Site settings → Delete data, then sign in again.
- Chrome and Edge are the most reliable browsers for Paramount+. Firefox with strict tracking protection is the most frequent source of error 111 reports.
Fix 3: Check for a network-level ad blocker
If every device in the house shows error 111 on Wi-Fi but your phone plays fine on mobile data, something on your network is filtering the ad domains.
- Pi-hole, AdGuard Home, or a router with built-in ad blocking: disable blocking temporarily (Pi-hole: Disable → for 5 minutes) and test. If that fixes it, allow-list the Paramount+ ad domains, or create a “streaming” client group that bypasses blocking for your TV.
- Filtering DNS (NextDNS, AdGuard DNS, Cloudflare 1.1.1.2/1.1.1.3, OpenDNS FamilyShield): set DNS back to Automatic on the router and on the device. On Android, also check Settings → Network & internet → Private DNS and set it to Automatic or Off; Private DNS is separate from Wi-Fi DNS and is a common hidden cause on phones.
- iPhone DNS profiles: Settings → General → VPN & Device Management. A DNS profile from an ad-blocking app (AdGuard, 1Blocker, NextDNS) filters every app, including Paramount+. Remove it or disable it while you test.
Fix 4: Turn off the VPN
- Paramount’s ad servers, like its licence servers, reject requests from known VPN and data-centre IP ranges. Turn the VPN completely off, including any kill switch, and reload.
- Many VPN apps also include their own ad and tracker blocking (NordVPN Threat Protection, Surfshark CleanWeb, Proton NetShield, ExpressVPN Threat Manager). Even with the tunnel off, that feature can stay on. Disable it in the VPN app’s settings.
- If the VPN is also the reason a title is unavailable, you will usually see error 131 instead of 111. The two share the same VPN fix.
Fix 5: Clear the app cache or reinstall
A crash, forced reboot, or power cut in the middle of playback can leave the app with a corrupted ad cache. This is the usual cause when the error is confined to one TV or one phone.
| Device | What to do |
|---|---|
| Android phone / tablet / Android TV / Google TV | Settings → Apps → Paramount+ → Storage → Clear cache. If that fails, Clear storage (data) and sign in again. |
| Fire TV / Fire Stick | Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → Paramount+ → Clear cache → Force stop. See our Fire TV Stick guide if the Stick itself is sluggish. |
| iPhone / iPad / Apple TV | No cache button. Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Paramount+ → Offload App, then reinstall from the App Store. On Apple TV, delete and reinstall. |
| Roku | Remove the channel, restart the Roku (Settings → System → Power → System restart), then add the channel again. Roku users on a Wi-Fi that drops should also check our Roku not connecting to Wi-Fi guide. |
| Samsung / LG smart TV | Uninstall the app, restart the TV by holding the power button for 10 seconds, then reinstall and sign in. |
| Xbox / PlayStation | Delete the app, restart the console fully (not rest mode), reinstall. |
Fix 6: Update the app and sign in again
- Update Paramount+ from your device’s app store. Ad-playback changes ship in app updates, and old versions can fail against new ad servers.
- Sign out on the device that shows the error, restart the device, and sign back in. A stale session can fail the ad request the same way it fails a licence request.
- Check the device’s date and time are automatic. A wrong clock makes ad and licence servers reject the connection.
Fix 7: Check whether Paramount+ is having an ad-server outage
- If the error started at the same time for everyone, including friends on other networks, the ad server is down. This happens during live sports and big premieres when ad demand spikes.
- Check Downdetector or Paramount’s social accounts. Nothing on your side will fix it; wait 30 to 60 minutes and try again.
Fix 8: Consider the plan itself
If you fight error 111 constantly because you rely on network-wide ad blocking for other reasons, the honest fix is structural: either give your streaming devices a bypass from the blocker, or switch to the Premium plan, which does not run the pre-roll ad request that produces this error. Paramount+ does not offer a way to keep an ad blocker active and stream on Essential.
If nothing above worked
- Test the same account on mobile data with every blocker off. If it plays, the cause is on your home network and you have not found the blocker yet: check the router’s own settings for “ad blocking”, “web filtering”, or “parental controls”.
- Test a different account on the same device. If that plays, the problem is your account session; sign out everywhere from the Paramount+ website and back in.
- When you contact Paramount+ support, tell them the exact wording (“unable to load a message from a sponsor”) and that you have already tested with blockers off and on a second network. It skips the generic script. Paramount’s own error-code page is here.

Error 111 is the ad-loading member of a family. Error 131 is a licence refusal, usually caused by a VPN or DNS. Error 3005 is a playback failure that usually points at the device. Frequently asked questions
What does error code 111 mean on Paramount Plus?
It means the player could not load the advertisement it needs to show before the video. The on-screen message asks you to disable ad-blocking software. The usual causes are a browser ad blocker, a network-level blocker such as Pi-hole or a filtering DNS, a VPN, or a corrupted app cache.
Why do I get error 111 even though I do not use an ad blocker?
Something else is blocking the ad request: a privacy setting such as Firefox strict tracking protection or Brave Shields, a DNS service that filters ads, a VPN with built-in tracker blocking, a router with web filtering, or a DNS profile installed by an app on your phone.
Does error 111 happen on the Premium plan?
Rarely. Premium does not run pre-roll ads on on-demand content, so the request that fails is not made. It can still appear on live TV streams that carry ads.
Can I keep my ad blocker and still watch Paramount Plus?
Only by allow-listing paramountplus.com and its ad domains in the blocker, which does not always work, or by giving your streaming device a bypass from a network-level blocker. Otherwise the choice is to disable the blocker for Paramount+ or move to the Premium plan.
What is the difference between error 111 and error 131?
Error 111 is an ad-loading failure and the fix is to unblock the ad request. Error 131 is a licence failure and the fix is to remove whatever is disguising your connection, usually a VPN or custom DNS. Both can be caused by a VPN, which is why turning it off is a step in both guides.
Why does error 111 only happen on my TV?
A corrupted app cache after a crash or power cut is the usual reason. Clear the cache on Android TV or Fire TV, or remove and reinstall the app on Roku, Apple TV, and Samsung or LG sets.
