If your mobile data is not working on Android in the US (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, or MVNOs like Visible, Mint, Metro, Cricket, Google Fi), the problem usually falls into one of these buckets:
- Phone-side issue: data toggle off, Airplane Mode stuck, Private DNS/VPN, background data limits
- Network-side issue: weak signal, tower congestion/outage, roaming mismatch
- Account/SIM issue: plan/data cap, line provisioning, eSIM/SIM problem
- Settings issue: wrong APN, wrong preferred network mode (LTE/5G)
Quick diagnosis with real signals
- If you see 5G/LTE icon but apps don’t load → often DNS/VPN/APN, or account provisioning
- If you have 0–1 bars → it’s coverage/signal (try moving, toggle Airplane Mode, check outages)
- If it works on Wi-Fi but not mobile data → do fixes below (data toggle, APN, network reset)
Do this first
- Toggle Airplane Mode ON 10 seconds → OFF
- Turn Mobile data OFF → ON
- Restart phone
- Turn VPN OFF and check Private DNS settings
- Reset mobile network settings (Pixel: Reset Mobile Network Settings)
- If still dead: verify plan/data cap, then check APN (carrier settings)

Fix 1: Turn Mobile Data off and back on
Go to Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (or Mobile network) → Mobile data
Toggle it OFF, wait 5 seconds, then ON. Google recommends this as a basic step.
Fix 2: Toggle Airplane Mode (fast radio reset)
Turn Airplane Mode ON → wait 10 seconds → OFF.
Google lists this as a core fix for connection problems.
Fix 3: Restart your phone
Carriers like T-Mobile also start troubleshooting with a restart + signal check.
Fix 4: Check signal bars and try a different spot
If you have fewer than 2 bars, step outside / near a window and try again. T-Mobile specifically flags low signal as a common cause.
Fix 5: Turn Wi-Fi OFF (test pure cellular)
Sometimes your phone stays “stuck” trying to use weak Wi-Fi.
Verizon notes Android may have features like “Switch to mobile data” / “Avoid bad Wi-Fi.”
For testing, turn Wi-Fi OFF and try cellular only.
Fix 6: Disable VPN / Proxy
VPN can make mobile data look connected but unusable (apps won’t load). Turn VPN OFF and test again.
Fix 7: Check Private DNS (Pixel/Android)
On Pixel/Android, Private DNS can affect connectivity. Google shows where to find it: Settings → Network & internet → Private DNS.
Try Automatic (or Off temporarily) and retest.
Fix 8: Check data limit / Data Saver restrictions
If you hit a data cap or your plan deprioritized you, speeds can drop hard. Also check if Data Saver is blocking background usage (especially for Play Store / apps).
Fix 9: Pick the correct SIM for data (Dual SIM phones)
If you use two SIMs/eSIM, make sure the right line is selected for Mobile data. Pixel guide shows selecting which SIM is used for data.
Fix 10: Reset Mobile Network Settings (best “clean slate”)
On Pixel: Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Mobile Network Settings
This often fixes “LTE/5G shows but no internet” after updates or weird glitches.
Fix 11: Check APN settings (carrier internet settings)
Wrong APN = mobile data won’t work even with signal.
- T-Mobile (BYOD) provides official APN guidance for phones not sold by T-Mobile.
- AT&T also provides official “program data settings / APN” guidance.
Tip: If you changed APN before, use Reset to default if your phone shows that option.
Fix 12: Turn Data Roaming ON only if you’re actually roaming
T-Mobile mentions enabling data roaming if you’re roaming across networks.
If you’re not roaming, leave it OFF.
Fix 13: Check for carrier outage / line provisioning issue
If nothing works and you have signal but no data, it might be:
- local outage/congestion
- your line needs a “refresh/provisioning” on carrier side
T-Mobile and Verizon both push users to carrier troubleshooting paths when basics fail.
Fix 14: Update Android (and carrier services)
System updates can fix modem/network bugs. Pixel guidance includes checking for system updates in network troubleshooting context.
Fix 15: Quick carrier-specific tips (USA)
- Verizon: check their network settings troubleshooter and features like “Avoid bad Wi-Fi.”
- T-Mobile: confirm signal bars, Airplane Mode off, and roaming setting if needed.
- AT&T: verify APN/data settings if data is failing.
If you still can’t connect after steps 1–12, contact your carrier and ask them to:
- confirm your plan has data
- refresh provisioning on your line
- check for local outages
