Obesity is a condition in which excess of fat is accumulated in body. Concept of BMI is necessary to understand the concept of obesity.  The body mass index (BMI) is defined as the weight in kilograms (kg) divided by height in meters (m) squared. A person having a BMI in the range of 25-29.9 is considered overweight, and an adult who has a BMI over 30 is considered obese.

 Classification system of BMI is given below:

  • v     BMI 19-24.9 is defined as normal weight
  • v     BMI 25-29.9 is defined as over weight
  • v     BMI  30-34.9 is defined as obese class 1
  • v     BMI 35-39.9 is defined as obese class 2
  • v     BMI  more than 40 is defined as obese class 3

Risks:

Obesity increases the risk of many other chronic diseases.

  • v     Hypertension
  • v     Type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • v     Heart attack
  • v     Stroke
  • v     Congestive heart failure

Causes:

Following are the major causes of obesity.

a)      Sedentary lifestyle

Sedentary life style is one of the major causes of obesity .Less you move, less calories you burn. Now-a-days, life is becoming much and more sedentary because of automatic devices.

a)      Genetics

Chances of being overweight are more in case one or both of the parents are obese.

b)      Over eating

People become obese because of overeating especially with diet rich in fats and carbohydrates. Fast food, sweets and fried food are high in calories and these calorie rich foods are one of the most common reasons of today’s obesity.

a)      Physical inactivity

People are not in the habit of regular exercise. So lack of physical activity also contributes to obesity.

b)      Not sleeping enough

Management:

  • v     Obesity develops when calorie intake is more than you burn. Physical activity like walk and exercise help to burn calories. Importance of exercise is more when you are trying to maintain weight. Exercise in general has good effect on your health. Physical activity combined with a diet control program is effective in the treatment of obesity. Exercise must be a part of your daily routine.
  • v     Take diet with low calories in order to avoid weight gain. Fruit and vegetables must be a part of your daily food. Increase dietary fiber in food and avoid fats and carbohydrates. Take nutritious and balanced diet in order to avoid vitamin deficiency. Eat after every 2-3 hour interval in small amount. Avoid soft drinks and other high calorie snack. Never miss your breakfast and try to take dinner 3-4 hours before you go for sleep.
  • v     Medicines are available for the treatment of obesity. Medications are recommended for patients with BMI more than 30.Different surgical procedures are also available.

On the basis of above discussion, one may conclude that weight control programmer requires consistent effort. You have to control your diet consistently and do exercise regularly.
