Insomnia refers to difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep or lack of refreshment from sleep. Insomnia and anxiety are among the commonest symptoms seen in general practice. When symptoms of insomnia occur for 1 month or more than 1 month then it is referred as chronic insomnia.

• Avoid stress especially at bed time.
• Try to make your bedroom comfortable, dark and quiet.
• Exercise regularly but it should be done in morning.
• Avoid heavy dinner
• Use relaxation technique

Hypnotic drugs provide only symptomatic treatment for insomnia.
A) Benzodiazepines

• Loprazolam

B) Non-benzodiazepines

B) Antihistamines
• Promethazine
Adverse effects of hypnotic drugs are:
• Tolerance and dependence
• Rebound insomnia
• Over sedation
Anxiolytic drugs are given below:
a) Benzodiazepines
• Alprazolam
• Chlordiazepoxide
• Diazepam
• Clonazepam
• Oxazepam
b) Tricyclic antidepressants
• Amitriptyline
• Imipramine
c) Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
• Fluoxetine
• Paroxetine
• Citalopram
d) Monoamine oxidase inhibitors
• Phenelzine
